The
AWEN Group sponsors three to four national/international professional
development conferences each year on current and emerging
topics relating to the conduct of research and regulatory
compliance for the life sciences. AWEN's acclaimed Assessment
and Treatment of Pain and Distress in Animals (ATOP)
conference series has been held annually since 2004. Its groundbreaking
June 2006 conference on harmonization of IACUCs, IBCs and
IRBs, offered with the Massachusetts Society for Medical Research,
has become an annual event to develop the dialogue on common ground
areas between these three vital institutional committees. And
AWEN's new "Three D's" conference series -- Development,
Disaster and Design
-- will address continuing education in the areas of animal care
and use program development, disaster planning for life science
research, and vivarium design.
AWEN conferences
and training help fulfill the training requirements specified in the recently-revised
USDA/APHIS/AC Policy#15,
which states that research facilities are required to ensure that members are
provided training and instruction to ensure they are qualified to assess the
facilities animal programs and procedures, as well as the facility itself.
